BiCast Computer and Web Trainings plus Digital Hygiene Resources

Basic digital hygiene is about Passwords, Updates, and Phishing.

Tip #1: Protect your passwords:

  • Enable “2-factor authentication” (2FA)
  • Use a different password for each service.
  • Longer passwords that are easy to remember (a sentence or a song lyric).
  • Use a password manager to remember all your passwords for you.

Tip #2: Keep your computer/phone up to date:

  • Enable automatic updates when possible. Less work for you!
  • Run a good anti-Virus package (see below)
  • Mac: Use the Apple-> App Store -> Updates
  • Windows: Start menu, type “updates” and use the update center.
  • iPhone: Settings -> Updates
  • Android: My Apps (see this article)

Tip #3: Avoid being “phished”: (links that trick you into entering your password)

Email providers that are “above average” more secure:

  • Apple iCloud / Mail App
  • (In all cases, enable “Two Factor Authentication”)

Anti-Virus Software:

  • Stick with the “big names”: McAfee, Symantec Norton, Kaspersky, Avast
  • Reviews: link

Password Managers:

Phone Charger Condoms: (Turns a USB charging cable into a “charge only” cable, stopping any sync/data)
